Employees and Mentors Wanted:Workshops Attract Diverse Talent for Start-Up Companies


On Thursday, April 2nd from 5:00 - 7:30pm Global Cleveland and Jumpstart will host the first of three FREE “Connecting Entrepreneurs to Talent” workshops. The goal of these workshops is to foster greater diversity in hiring practices for start-up tech companies in Northeast Ohio. The workshops aim to facilitate greater coordination in the networking and hiring processes of start-ups, thus allowing candidates and entrepreneurs the opportunity to connect based on appropriate needs, skills, and interests. There will be two concurrent workshops, one for jobseekers/mentors and one for start-ups/entrepreneurs. Following the two workshops candidates, mentors and entrepreneurs will be able to meet and connect.

Explore cool neighborhoods on bus tour


Get on the bus and explore cool neighborhoods in Cleveland. CLE City Life Tours are offered as an introduction (or re-introduction) to the city’s neighborhoods. They provide these tours to reveal the excitement happening in Cleveland and deliver valuable information about living here.

A CLE City Life Tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours. Primary neighborhood destinations include Ohio City, Tremont, Detroit Shoreway, Downtown, Midtown, University Circle and Little Italy – with many more neighborhoods referenced. A walking tour of a residential unit that is located within one of the feature neighborhoods is included. Transportation is provided. All riders receive the most recent copy of the LiveCLEVELAND! guide. Exact starting location will be confirmed prior to the tour date.

As part of its mission to increase the flow of population into the region, Global Cleveland works to inform international students about Migration options and engage them in life beyond their school. For this reason it is critical that students have the most comprehensive, To get students up-to-date on visa requirements, Global Cleveland asked Erin Brown Farro, a Cleveland-area attorney specializing in Migration law, to provide tips on the latest U.S. Migration information.

Brown Farro has found that when it comes to visas, students are often more knowledgeable than prospective employers. For this reason, it is critically important that students familiarize themselves with the processes and application/extension dates. Sherwin-Williams offers a number of internships that provide hands-on, real world experience to undergraduate and graduate students. There are a range of options available, including programs that focus on retail sales, information technology, research and development, and global supply chain management. I have made it a priority to stay updated on the most current International Newcomer integration best practices, and I continue to look at the Welcoming Economies Global Network (formerly the Global Great Lakes Network) as a successful model. Under the leadership of Steve Tobocman, Director of Global Detroit, the WE Global Network has expanded its reach beyond the Great Lakes region and includes over a dozen economic development organizations from the Rust Belt region, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In January, the Network released a call for ideas for the White House Task Force on New Americans for an International Newcomer Integration Plan. The report was released in concert with organizations across the country. Recommendations include:

International Newcomer Spotlight: Entrepreneur Cesar Sandoval


Entrepreneur Cesar Sandoval is the creator of EthnicQuest, an online advertising company that connects Cleveland-based ethnic and International Newcomer-owned businesses with anyone seeking international products or services. Explore EthnicQuest on Global Cleveland HERE.

Cesar Sandoval's family is originally from Spain, but he grew up in Mexico. He arrived in Cleveland with a student visa in 2001 to enter the MBA program at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). After completing his MBA, he began working for a business consulting firm and was able to stay in the United States, first on an OPT (optional practical training) visa, then on a NAFTA visa offered to Canadian and Mexican citizens. In 2010, Cesar was granted permanent resident status. He spent five years at a consulting firm, followed by a stint at Lincoln Capital, before branching out on his own as a business consultant.
