The Cleveland Engineering Society (CES) is a non-profit professional development organization that provides speaker series and conferences, professional certification test review sessions, and networking and leadership opportunities to engineering and technical professionals across Northeast Ohio. In addition to professional development, CES has an active community outreach program that promotes interest in engineering and technology.

Susan Davis, President of ESA Automation Services, is a past President and current member of the CES Board of Directors. Davis partners with engineering departments at area universities like Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, and University of Akron to present workshops focused on job search maximization. Through partnerships with organizations like Global Cleveland, Davis promotes the mission of CES, which is to help stop brain drain throughout the Northeast Ohio region. “Students may not understand what networking means. That’s where professional organizations like [CES] can be very beneficial. Five good face-to-face contacts will get them farther than 1500 Facebook friends of LinkedIn connections”, says Davis. LinkedIn is a great resource, but it is not the only resource, and CES stimulates a higher probability of success in the job market through personal interactions.

Davis says there are a high percentage of international students searching for jobs, and CES has determined that the greatest need is providing students assistance with diction, pronunciation, and “Americanizing” resumes. For example, Rockwell Automation is one of CES’s Gold partners and will soon be hiring 124 engineers. CES is working with area universities to fill that need.

In addition to workshops and job search training, CES hosts a series of six Leadership Breakfasts and a number of conferences and other events. Almost every program or seminar has continuing education credits (PDH) attached to it, which is just one more membership benefit for young – and seasoned – professionals.
