Entrepreneur Cesar Sandoval is the creator of EthnicQuest, an online advertising company that connects Cleveland-based ethnic and immigrant-owned businesses with anyone seeking international products or services. Explore EthnicQuest on Global Cleveland HERE.

Cesar Sandoval's family is originally from Spain, but he grew up in Mexico. He arrived in Cleveland with a student visa in 2001 to enter the MBA program at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). After completing his MBA, he began working for a business consulting firm and was able to stay in the United States, first on an OPT (optional practical training) visa, then on a NAFTA visa offered to Canadian and Mexican citizens. In 2010, Cesar was granted permanent resident status. He spent five years at a consulting firm, followed by a stint at Lincoln Capital, before branching out on his own as a business consultant.

MetroHealth Opens Innovative Language Access Center


To provide social and medical services to Cleveland residents in need of translation assistance MetroHealth will soon open a Language Access and Communication Center, which will provide medical and social services to Cleveland residents with limited English proficiency, hearing or sight impairments, and illiterate or low- literate native English speakers. Many organizations that provide social and medical services have interpreters available for assistance with language access. However, no other organization has a concierge center for individuals seeking language services.

NEED WORKERS? Start an internship program now.


Sherwin-Williams, Giant Eagle, Rockwell Automation, Lubrizol, First Energy and Parker Hannifin Corp. are some of the companies with the largest number of internship opportunities in the region per the February 2015 Ohio Means Jobs’ Internship report. This is great news. However, according to NOCHE (Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education) there are over 226,000 students in Northeast Ohio. These companies alone cannot offer enough internships to satisfy all the internships needed in our market.

There are many reasons to have an internship program, but perhaps the most telling is the fact that nationally employers made full-time offers to 64.8% of their interns. (According to the 2014 National Association of Colleges and Employers' (NACE) Internship and Coop Survey.

It's amazing what one organization can learn from another if given the opportunity.  The Global Great Lakes Network (GGLN) provided me  and Global Cleveland’  Director of Development and Outreach Richard Konisiewicz such an opportunity.  Through a GGLN funded city-to-city initiative Richard and I were able to get a first-hand look at how St. Louis is approaching the issues of immigration and talent attraction.. GGLN is a group of over a dozen regional economic development initiatives from across the Midwest working to tap into the economic development opportunities created by immigrants.

Ohio is the first state to pass a law that makes attracting and retaining international college students a priority. Lawmakers recognized that educating international students is a huge boost to the state’s economy and global competitiveness.

Cleveland Gets Its Goat

As the Year of the Goat trots in, Cleveland will light up with rousing celebrations that will welcome all into our city’s vibrant Chinese community.

The Goat, who takes the reins Feb. 19, brings plenty of luck for those born under his sign: lucky numbers of 2 and 7, lucky flowers of carnation and primrose, and lucky colors of red and purple.

Immigrant spotlight: Asim Datta finds his purpose in people

Assim Datta

Asim Datta is a community builder. The Indian-born entrepreneur and community leader says his love of people is what drives him to succeed not only in business, but in showcasing the vibrant, diverse cultural landscape of Cleveland.

“All through this journey in my life, there is one thing that was very important to me: connecting with people,” says Datta, who has lived in Greater Cleveland for more than 30 years.

After starting an ad business in his native Kolkata, Datta came to Cleveland in the early 1980s to continue his studies in advertising and marketing. With an uncle and two cousins already in the area, Datta found Cleveland to be a “natural draw.”
