Biomedical Industry Provides Career Growth in Greater Cleveland


The biomedical industry sector is a rapidly expanding cluster area in Northeast Ohio growing from 300 companies in 2002 to over 700 in 2014.  According to BioOhio, an organization that builds and accelerates bioscience industry, research, and education in Ohio, the sector includes companies focused on medical devices & equipment, pharmaceuticals & therapeutics, medical & testing labs, research & development, agricultural biotechnology, and medical product distribution. Those working in the biomedical field earn an average wage of $69,604, and jobs include a wide variety of occupations.

Cleveland Clinic Champions Diversity and Inclusion


The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Cleveland Clinic promotes cultural competency through strategic programming that cultivates an inclusive organization, develops talent, and supports employees to better serve patients.  Under the leadership of Executive Director Le Joyce Naylor, Program Manager Anila Nicklos and other team members, a range of programming has been created that contributes to the development of a diverse workplace environment where patients and fellow employees, feel appreciated, valued, and welcomed. Having arrived in Cleveland from her native Albania seventeen years ago, Nicklos has a personal commitment to promoting Cleveland as a welcoming place for all. In addition to her role at Cleveland Clinic, where all employees are called “caregivers”, Nicklos is active in the community and is a proud Global Cleveland volunteer.

International Newcomer Spotlight: Faozou Ligali


Faozou Ligali, owner of Ligali’s Bistro in the historic Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, moved to the United States from the Republic of Benin, West Africa in 2009. Benin is a former French colony, and many Beninese students immigrate to France after high school. In 2001 Ligali emigrated from Africa to Paris, where he lived for eight years, before relocating to the United States. The move was a relatively easy transition for Ligali, who chose to move to the United States to build his English-language skills. Ligali spent a year in Indiana, where he lived with a Beninese friend while studying at a local university. In 2010 Ligali moved to Cleveland, where he continued to hone his language skills at Cuyahoga Community College.

As many of you may know, the Board of Directors of Global Cleveland has accepted the resignation of our president, Joy Roller. As we examine our focus and structure, we have agreed with Joy that she will best be able to assist Global Cleveland as a consultant working on these issues. We would like to thank Joy for her passion, dedication, and hard work on behalf of Global Cleveland as our president. We look forward to Joy’s continuing counsel in her new role. Moving forward, we have named Richard Konisiewicz, Director of Development and Community Outreach, as interim director.

Global Cleveland launches “Tech Talks” during Tech Week


 OHTec (formerly NEOSA ) launched Tech Week with the intention to expand the Best of Tech Awards and create more awareness of the regional IT industry. The mission has since expanded to support, connect, engage and celebrate the regional IT community. This year Tech Week, April 13 - 17, will feature a weeklong series of events including “Tech Talks”, hosted by Global Cleveland. The FREE speaker series will be held at partner colleges. Sessions are open to the public, but registration is requested.

Computer and IT Talent – You Are the Region’s Highest In-Demand Workers


Northeast Ohio needs information technology workers! According to a report released by the Cleveland Foundation, individuals with computer and information technology skills are the most in-demand talent in the region. The report shows that in Northeast Ohio in 2013 there were 11,204 job openings in information technology. However, in the same year, that number compares to only 1,301 students awarded academic credentials in information technology. There is an obvious need to grow and attract IT talent to the Greater Cleveland region. Consequently, many of our local colleges, companies and organizations are taking action to grow this sector.

Find Your Entrepreneurs EDGE


If you are a graduate student or part of a mid-sized company, you'll want to know more about Entrepreneurs EDGE. EDGE is a nonprofit economic development organization that assists mid-sized companies in Northeast Ohio grow in value.

For the past six years, EDGE has offered a Fellows Summer Intern Program. The program offers a two-month, paid summer internship, primarily for graduate students to focus on business development and innovation. Applications are currently being accepted for summer 2015. Newcomer Spotlight: Hannah Chauvin


Cleveland newcomer Hannah Chauvin relocated from balmy New Orleans, Louisiana to tackle the role of Manager of Alumni Leadership and Community Partnerships at Teach for America (TFA), an organization that places a diverse group of leaders in low-income communities to teach for two years. Hannah says, “Being raised in the south, I had no concept of what a real winter would be like. Everyone made it seem like it was going to be a scene out of Day After Tomorrow where if you are outside you freeze to death. Luckily for me, it was not the case, and I safely made it through my first Midwestern winter.
