International Student Workshops at Cleveland State University


Global Cleveland and Cleveland State University are partnering on a series of international student workshops focused on job search skills to help prepare international students for careers after graduation. The workshops are aimed to develop networking and interviewing skills.

The networking reception taking place on Wednesday, October 28th will be led by Global Cleveland and CSU’s Graduate Student Resource Center to give international graduate students the opportunity to learn more about interviewing and professional networking in Cleveland, as well as give the students more guidance on how to properly engage with professionals in the area.

International Newcomer Spotlight: Dr. Helen Muga


At just thirteen years old, Dr. Helen Muga relocated from her native Papua New Guinea to attend school in Australia. Dr. Muga’s experience with other cultures at a young age made the transition easier when she moved again, years later, to Cleveland. No stranger to a challenge, Dr. Muga is also a former professional athlete and led her track team to break a national record that stood for eight years!

Join Global Cleveland and JumpStart for the third installment in a series of collaborative talent attraction workshops to attract new, diverse talent that will support the growth of startup companies. The workshop takes place on October 29th, and consists of a resume writing and review session, talent workshop, entrepreneur workshop, and open networking. ASIA, Inc. was founded in 1995 as a social service agency focused on improving the quality of life for Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in Northeast Ohio.

It was a long time ago but I recently related that experience to friends whereby we discussed at length the problems of so many students from all over the world who are studying in Northeast Ohio’s colleges and universities. I wondered if they felt the same anxiety as I did. To add to my trepidation back then was the fact that it was also my first overseas trip that tilted my personal anxiety-meter to extreme.

On the Road With Richard Konisiewicz... Dispatches from Poland


This month, we follow Global Cleveland’s Richard Konisiewicz as he treks through Poland. Richard’s travels began in the Polish capital of Warsaw, which is also the country’s largest city. Much of Warsaw – especially the city’s old town – was destroyed during World War II, but has since been painstakingly restored to its pre-war beauty. From Warsaw, Richard headed north to Dansk, then south to visit cities like Poznan, Krakow, Zakopane, Wieliczka, and more! Keep reading for a glimpse into his travels!

Global Cleveland and International Partners in Mission to Host #Welcome2Cle Reception


On October 28, please join Global Cleveland and International Partners in Mission (IPM) in welcoming IPM’s international visitors, project partners, regional staff, and executive board members! The visitors are arriving in Cleveland from Brazil, El Salvador, India, Nicaragua, and all over the United States. The group will be in the area to attend a number of IPM events, including the Annual Awards Luncheon and International Executive Board meeting. The welcoming reception will he held at the new Santorini Greek Taverna in the Cleveland’s Warehouse District.

International Newcomer Spotlight: Joel Ayapana


When Joel Ayapana was four years old his family relocated from Pagbilao, a small village nestled within the archipelagic islands of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean. Ayapana’s family had been told that the Midwest was full of employment opportunities, so in the late 1970s the family moved to Cleveland. At times the transition was difficult, particularly when the family had to struggle just to make ends meet.

Congratulations to local artist Nahid Sadrian!

In honor of National Welcoming Week, Global Cleveland is presenting an ongoing art exhibit at the main branch of the Cleveland Public Library. The exhibit, which showcases works by local International Newcomer artists, will be on display through the end of September. The free exhibit is open daily from 10a – 6p, and is closed on Sundays. Although Welcoming Week is over, Global Cleveland hopes to continue to honor the contributions made by newcomers to the Cleveland community. … Speaking of artwork, local artist Nahid Sadrian sold her first painting during the exhibit’s opening reception on September 15th!
