Ukrainian Museum-Archives Celebrates Cleveland's International Newcomer Heritage and Welcomes GOP Convention

Ukrainian International Newcomers began coming to Cleveland in the 1870s to take jobs in the growing chemical and manufacturing sector. Many expected to work for a few years, save money and then go home to buy land. Inevitably, many more put down roots and instead America became their home. Over the ensuing decades, the International Newcomer community established small businesses—bakeries, meat stands, dairies, saloons, restaurants. They built churches and cultural centers. Subsequent waves of International Newcomers after World War I and then after World War II fled tyranny in the Old Country and came to America and to Cleveland seeking freedom. The “old International Newcomers” who had come for employment, welcomed the “new” political International Newcomers, opening the doors to their homes, businesses and cultural institutions. The course Ukrainian Migration took was similar, indeed the same, as that of other nationalities who together created our community’s magnificent social mosaic, best reflected in the West Side Market.

Interdependence by Valdis Krebs

As a child I saw a constant parade of strangers arriving at our house, sharing stories, eating dinner, and retiring to our guest bedroom. Of course they were only strangers to me. This parade of visitors were connections from my parents' past. Some were strong ties, some were weak ties. Everyone left our house fed, rested, and encouraged on their journey.

Try, try, try, try, TRY

This past week I had the unbelievable privilege of being the commencement speaker at Thomas Jefferson International Newcomers Academy, a Cleveland Metropolitan School District school, that helps students achieve a comprehensive grasp of their new language in a timely manner so they can successfully transition to a mainstream school. This school is home to 800 students from 25 different nations, speaking more than 15 unique languages before they become proficient in English. The graduation was just beautiful. The students and their families were overjoyed. The faculty and staff was equal parts wistful, proud, relieved, and happy.

In the 100 days following April 6, 1994, approximately 800,000 men, women, and children were massacred in one of society’s most tragic genocides. My travel group arrived in Kigali, following a short plane right from Nairobi, Kenya and as soon as we put our bags down we headed straight to the Genocide Memorial in Kigali.
