Changes to Medicaid eligibility for certain non-citizens will take effect nationwide on October 1, 2026. Ahead of those changes, some Ohio Medicaid recipients are being asked to provide updated information about their immigration status.
Global Cleveland wants to make sure members of Northeast Ohio’s international community understand what these notices mean, what steps they may need to take and where they can find assistance.
The most important thing to know: If you receive a request for information about your immigration status, do not ignore it.
Ohio began sending notices to some Medicaid recipients in August asking them to provide documentation confirming their current immigration status. Even if you have provided these documents in the past, you still need to respond if you receive a new request.
What should you do if you receive a notice?
First, read the notice carefully and look for the deadline to respond. You may be asked to provide a current U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) document.
There are several ways Cuyahoga County residents can provide the requested information, including through the Ohio Benefits Self-Service Portal, by email or fax, at participating library locations, through secure CJFS drop boxes, or with assistance at the Cuyahoga County Welcome Center.
It is important to respond before the deadline. If the requested information is not provided in time, a person’s Medicaid coverage may change to the Non-Citizen Emergency Medical Assistance (NCEMA) program, which provides coverage only for treatment of an emergency medical condition.
