Global Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University Office of International Affairs convened a workshop for international students on February 17th, 2016 with guest speaker immigration attorney Erin Brown. Students asked questions regarding visas and employment options available after graduation.
Over 100 students attended this session who expressed an interest in working in fields ranging from social work, engineering, IT, management and business, healthcare, higher education and more. Navigating the employment process can be daunting for international students and employers, but with the help of CWRU, Global Cleveland, and immigration attorneys, the process can be smooth and successful for both sides. One of the most important aspects to remember is that both employers and international students need to be proactive and plan as far ahead as possible.
Topics discussed included:
Understanding the differences between temporary visas and immigrant visas;
Transitioning from OPT to employment-based visas or green card;
Alternatives to the H1B, including investor visas and other specific visa programs such as TN or O
Timelines and student responsibilities;
How to communicate with employers about needing sponsorship now or in the future
Case Western Reserve University students (and all area international students on an F-1 visa) are eligible for work following graduation under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. This program does not require sponsorship or any fees from the employer and is handled by the international student and their designated school official.
