In partnership with The City of Cleveland, City Hall will be flying the Philippine Flag. Cleveland’s Filipino American community started growing in the 1920’s, grew rapidly in the decades following WWII, and we continue to welcome new Filipinos to Northeast Ohio today.

  • Immigrant Stories Submission

For Welcoming Week, Literary Cleveland and The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage partnered with us on a project called Immigrant Stories Submission, where stories from immigrants who settled in Northeast Ohio were selected to run in Cleveland Scene Magazine’s September 8th issue. In partnership with The City of Cleveland, City Hall will be flying the Global Cleveland Flag. The flags that we are flying over the course of Welcoming Week celebrate Cleveland’s immigration history, both current and historic, as well as our international bonds. Throughout this week we will honor Cleveland’s immigrants and their contributions to Cleveland. Join our many celebrations this week, from panels, recommended authors, cooking demonstrations, and much more!

    • In partnership with Pickwick & Frolic, we are hosting a drawing for 3 lucky winners to each receive 4 tickets to Hilarities 4th Street Theatre in Cleveland!

      Hilarities 4th Street Theatre is one of the largest made-for-comedy venues in the country, presenting the best in national stand-up comedy.

      The drawing will be live on Global Cleveland’s Facebook on Friday, September 17th at 5 PM.

In partnership with The City of Cleveland, City Hall will be flying Egyptian Flag. On our third day of Welcoming Week, we celebrate our partnership with Cleveland Public Library and the rich literary history of immigrants, both in Cleveland and around the world. In celebration, we are flying the flag of Egypt, home to our Sister City of Alexandria. Alexandria one of the world’s greatest library traditions, historically home to the famous Great Library of Alexandria, and is still home to a brilliant institution today.

  • Scottish American Society Meeting | 3-5 p.m. | Main Library, Akron-Summit County Public Library system

    • The Scottish American Society will gather on Sunday, 12th of September 3:00 to 5:00 in the auditorium on the meeting room level of the Main Library, Akron-Summit County Public Library system, 60 S. High Street, in Akron.

    • Parking is free on Sundays and is immediately adjacent to the building in the parking garage.

    • Masks are suggested but not mandatory.

In partnership with The City of Cleveland, City Hall will be flying the Polish Flag. Polish immigration to Cleveland has a long history and today Cleveland is still home to strong Polish community that proudly celebrates its heritage. Our Polish community has also left an indelible legacy in Cleveland’s culinary scene.

In partnership with The City of Cleveland, City Hall will be flying the Korean Flag. We are flying the Korean Flag to celebrate the Korean American Community and their history in Cleveland. Cleveland’s Korean American community grew rapidly in the 1970’s and they settled throughout different parts of the city and throughout Northeast Ohio. Today the Korean-American Association of Greater Cleveland organizes the community and continues to celebrate Korean Culture.

  • Asian and Black Solidarity | 10:00 A.M. | Virtual

    • A panel discussion discussing Asian and Black solidarity. Global Cleveland’s goal has always been to create an inclusive, welcoming community for newcomers in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. In our work we are confronted with the misperception that welcoming one group means not supporting other marginalized groups such as the black community. We know that this is false, and we would like to hold a conversation that discuss how most of these marginalized communities in fact live together and work together every day. Many of Cleveland’s black neighborhoods are also immigrant and newcomer neighborhoods, both historically and today. In this current climate of the recent Asian American discrimination propagated by white nationalism, we’d like to discuss working together in solidarity can bring voice to our Asian community members that are affected through the empathy and understanding of the equally marginalized black voices.

Cleveland has a long history of Irish Immigration and, on Cleveland’s west side, a thriving Irish Community can be found around Kamm’s Corner. One of the oldest immigrant groups in the country, Cleveland’s Irish Community has been part of the fabric of Cleveland and NEO for over 200 years.

We are proud to celebrate our Somali community and the important role they play in making Cleveland, Cleveland. One of Cleveland’s newest immigrant communities, the Somalis play a key part of the future of our region and allow us to continue the legacy of welcoming new immigrants to our city.

We would like to thank community leaders from both the east and west sides of the city for working to make their first cultural celebration festival possible in October 2021.

In partnership with The City of Cleveland, City Hall will be flying the Hungarian Flag. Cleveland’s Hungarian Community has a long and proud history here in Cleveland and throughout NEO. We are flying the Hungarian flag today to mark the St Elizabeth Festival celebrating Hungarian culture. While much of Cleveland’s Hungarian Community is second and third generation, they have traditionally been one of the largest communities in Greater Cleveland, and Greater Cleveland – to this day – is one of most common places of residence for people of either Hungarian descent or birth outside of Hungary. Most importantly, like all the communities we mentioned earlier this week, they represent and our partner of the ever-changing fabric that has made Cleveland, is Cleveland, and will continue making Cleveland far into the future.

Proclamations & Resolutions

In celebration of Welcoming Week 2021, communities across Northeast Ohio partnered with Global Cleveland to produce a statement to our newcomer community that says, “You are welcome here.”

“Happy Welcoming Week! I am proud to be the mayor of a strong, diverse, multicultural community. One out of every five Beachwood residents was born outside the United States. An emergency resolution introduced by myself and then-Council VP James Pasch in January 2017 declared Beachwood to be a “Welcoming City.” I believe our warm welcome to  immigrants is one reason why Beachwood added the most new residents of any Cuyahoga County municipality in the 2020 Census.” – Mayor Martin Horwitz of Beachwood
