During the month of June, Welcome.us is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Immigrant Heritage Month in honor of our nation’s immigrants, and to celebrate and highlight their accomplishments and contributions to our country’s history. Global Cleveland is proud to join Welcome.us in this celebration by encouraging all Clevelanders to share their personal and family stories of coming to America.

We invite you to share your story on social media using the hashtags #IMH15 and #IHMCLE. We encourage you to add photos and quotes from family members. Throughout the month these stories will be highlighted on Global Cleveland’s website.

To celebrate the Cleveland’s diversity, which connects us all, Global Cleveland will be hosting a variety of activities and events, including:

·       Cultural Garden Tour

Global Cleveland will host a walking tour of Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens, highlighting the history of immigration and migration within the Cleveland community. The roughly two-hour tour is scheduled for June 10th at 10:00 AM, with a rain date of June 11th.

·       Screenings of A Dream Deferred and The Dream is Now

Global Cleveland will be screening two documentaries on June 23rd from 6:00-8:00 PM about the struggles of the country’s nearly 11.1 million undocumented immigrants and the difficulties of the U.S. immigration system. The screenings, which will last about 30 minutes each, will be held at the Global Cleveland office and will be followed by a group discussion.

·       La Placita

A Hispanic themed open-air market near the intersection of Clark Avenue and West 25th Street, La Placita is a growing event that supports local immigrants and promotes Hispanic culture.

·       #ChooseCLE International Meetup Dinner

To cap off Immigrant Heritage Month, Global Cleveland will host a mixer at Luchita’s Mexican Restaurant on Tuesday, June 30th.

Promoting Greater Cleveland as a welcoming place for immigrant and refugees is an important component of Global Cleveland’s mission. Every year over 5,000 international students arrive in Greater Cleveland to pursue their education at one of our region’s premier colleges and universities. Please join Global Cleveland by welcoming them, embracing their contributions, and by highlighting our city as an immigrant-friendly community.
