Breakfast at the hotel and check out. Bring your luggage and make your way independently to the train station. Here you will board a train to Venice (45min – 1h). Upon arrival at the train station, secure your luggage in a locker and spend the day exploring the “Floating City”.
Venice, La Serenissima, is a symphony of romance, elegance, mystery, and invigoration. Built to accommodate an active maritime trade of exotic spice from the Far East, Venice, and her intriguing history are fascinating. Rich in art, architecture, and literature, she will take your breath away. You may choose to venture into the heart of Venice to unveil her most precious treasures. The Grand Canal leads to The Piazza San Marco and the incredible Basilica. Saint Mark’s Basilica is a wonderful example of Byzantine Venetian architecture. It was at one time the Doge’s chapel but it was also the mausoleum for Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, whose life is narrated in the golden mosaics on the walls. The Palazzo Ducale or Duke‘s Palace is also located here. This impressive structure is a combination of Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture, and was the official residence of the 120 Doges who ruled the “Serenissima Republic” for 1,100 years. If you choose, you may explore the many lavish rooms and admire masterpieces by Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese, and Bellini.

Before you leave Venice, you should try a relaxing ride in an authentic Venetian gondola. You may also choose to visit the gift shops around Ponte Rialto. Or, you can wander through the Dorsoduro neighborhood, a true Venetian area filled with small alleyways, bridges, and small antique markets. Later in the late afternoon, make your way back to the train station to retrieve your bags. You will then board a train to Florence. When you arrive at the Florence train station, proceed to the end of the track where you will meet your private driver for a private transfer to your hotel in the city. Check-in and settle. Overnight in Florence. B/TRTK/TRTK/PT/H

Florence is known as the Cradle of the Renaissance. Your tour will include a visit to the famous Duomo of Florence, which is the fourth largest church in the world. With its grandiose cupola by Brunelleschi, Giotto’s bell tower, and the Baptistery with its famous bronze doors, the Duomo is an amazing sight to see. Learn about the father of the Italian language, Florence’s Dante Alighieri, and view the lavishly painted dome. Continue to Piazza della Reppublica, the city center complete with a carousel. Learn about important Florentine products, like artisan paper and all types of leather goods. Visit Ponte Vecchio for views of the Arno River and see Piazza Signoria, the “outdoor gallery” that served as the original home of the David. We will include skip the line entrance tickets to the Galleria Accademia where you will view the beautiful sculptures by Michelangelo, the slaves or prisoners of the rocks, and the unforgettable statue of David. Day 6 Florence – Orvieto – Rome

Breakfast at the hotel and check out. This morning, meet your private driver in the hotel lobby. Today you will enjoy a lovely drive through the rolling hills of Tuscany and Umbria on the way to Rome. Be sure to bring your camera today in order to capture the amazing views along your journey. Your first stop will be in Orvieto (approx 2h). The origins of Orvieto date back to the Etruscan Civilization.

The first Etruscan settlements, going back to the 9th century B.C., in fact, were found inside the tuffaceous caves in the bedrock upon which today rises the city itself. You may choose to visit the Duomo as it is the most famous Cathedral in the city. Construction of this Italian Gothic-style structure took 100 years to complete and dates back to 1263. The Duomo houses the blood-soaked cloth which is the relic related to the miracle at Lake Bolsena which occurred in the same year. The modern-day Roman Catholic Festival of Corpus Christi is a result of this miracle. One of our favorite things to do is to sit back and observe the Orvietani (citizens of Orvieto) themselves, as Orvieto is a very tranquil and contained city and independent exploration is a pleasure. We will arrange lunch for you in an Etruscan cave built into the side of the cliff of Orvieto. It was used as a rope-making workshop and then turned into a unique restaurant, serving delicious local specialties. After lunch, continue with your driver to your hotel in Rome (approx 1h30m).

Check into your hotel and then spend the remainder of the day exploring the sights of Rome. You may choose to toss coins into the Trevi Fountain or walk on the Spanish Steps. Overnight in Rome. B/PD/L/H

Day 7 Rome

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Today, meet your private, bilingual certified guide in the hotel lobby for a tour of Rome’s Antiquities.

As you walk through the vivacious city of Rome, your senses will be simultaneously stimulated by antiquity and modern-day society. You will feel the heart-beat of the city as you pass through the Piazza Venezia, where you will admire the huge monument dedicated to the first Italian King, Vittorio Emmanuele II. The Italians refer to this monument as the “Wedding Cake,” and you will see why. Today, this has been dedicated to the memory of the unknown soldiers with the eternal flame. You will pass the Teatro Marcello and The Circus Maximus, the site of many chariot races. You will enter The Coliseum, the magnificent Flavian Amphitheatre, where you will envision the gladiator duels, wild beast fights and naval battles which were arranged for the entertainment of the Roman people. Enjoy an in-depth lesson about the construction, history and events that took place here; to save time, we will prearrange entrance tickets. The Arch of Constantine is visible from here as well. Please note no liquids are allowed inside the Coliseum. Finally, you will visit the Pantheon and discover its unique history as a Roman pagan temple turned Catholic Church. It is also the final resting place of the famous Renaissance artist Raphael.

Later this afternoon, we will pre-arrange entrance tickets for a visit to the Vatican. Independently make your own way to Vatican City. Your visit today will include the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. Please note that you must be covered from the neck to the elbows and down to the knees for entrance.

From the Swiss Guard to the Vatican Gardens, you will discover the unique story of the home of Catholicism. The journey through the Vatican Museums will proceed through the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of Maps. From these Galleries, enter directly into the Raphael Rooms, where you will observe the extraordinary frescoes executed by Raphael and then the Sistine Chapel. In the Sistine Chapel and in silence, you will stand witness to the extraordinary Chapel painted by Michelangelo. The actual visit to the Basilica, the largest Christian place in the World, should include a viewing of the magnificent Pieta by Michelangelo, Bernini’s bronze Baldacchino (canopy), and the throne of St. Peter. After your time in Vatican City, make your own way back to your hotel and spend the remainder afternoon at leisure. Tonight we will arrange a farewell dinner for you to enjoy at our favorite restaurant in Rome. Tonight, prepare for your overseas flight. Overnight in Rome. B/G/ET/ET with Audio Guide/D/H
