SUMMARY:11th Annual Cleveland Kurentovanje Main Festival and Parade
DESCRIPTION:The main festival day of the 2023 Cleveland Kurentovanje will kick off with the Fifth Annual Kurent Dash 5K at 10 a.m. The celebration continues with a parade at Noon featuring cultural and local organizations\, groups of masquerading friends and the highlight of the day\, the Kurenti. \nFollowing the parade\, revelers will enjoy free musical and cultural performances\, authentic food and drink\, kids crafts and much more. \nThis year’s Cleveland Kurentovanje\, will be celebrated both inside the Slovenian National Home and outside in the adjoining courtyard and open areas\, where outdoor seating and heaters will provide plenty of space to enjoy the features of the day. Attendees should dress like they’re tailgating for a Browns game in the Muni Lot\, going sledding at the Toboggan Chutes\, or preparing to party outside all day in whatever weather Cleveland may bring to our festival. Participants are also encouraged to dress in costume of any kind to celebrate in the Mardi Gras tradition. \nFull schedule for the day: \n\n\n9:00 a.m.: Fifth Annual Kurent Dash 5K Race registration and packet pickup begins at St. Vitus Hall. Register for the race today: https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Cleveland/KurentDash5K \n\n\n10:00 a.m.: The Fifth Annual Kurent Dash 5K Race departs from the St. Vitus Parish Hall at East 60th and Lausche Ave. \n\n\n10:00 a.m.: Gates open at the Slovenian National Home & surrounding festival grounds. SUMMARY:Lessons from South Africa: Moving Past Polarization and Intense Division in America
DESCRIPTION:At a time when America is facing immense polarization\, there are lessons to be learned from other nations that have faced similar challenges. From South Africa to Northern Ireland\, other societies have struggled with intense divisions that nearly tore them apart. What solutions worked for countries like South Africa that Americans can consider to reconcile our own divisions? And what does truth and reconciliation look like here in our own country with its own history of colonization and slavery? Roelf Meyer is known for his role as the South African government’s chief representative in the 1993 negotiations to end apartheid and establish a democratic country. He served in the cabinet of former President Nelson Mandela\, and later became secretary-general of the National Party. In 1997 he co-founded the United Democratic Movement. Meyer consulted on international peace processes in Kosovo\, Myanmar\, Northern Ireland\, and Rwanda\, among others. Mohammed Bhabha is a former Member of Parliament\, qualified attorney\, and experienced negotiator. He was part of the African National Congress (ANC) team at the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA)\, and later as part of the agreements on the final South African Constitution. Mohammed has worked on transitional and constitutional support projects in Kenya\, South Sudan\, Madagascar\, Sri Lanka\, Yemen\, Palestine\, Bahrain\, and Zimbabwe. Join the City Club of Cleveland for a conversation led by Carina Van Vliet with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs\, and two renowned world leaders who were instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa on lessons that we can apply to current American divisions.
