SUMMARY:Western Reserve Chorale presents Jubilate Deo by Dan Forrest
DESCRIPTION:Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text\, “O be joyful in the Lord\, all ye lands\,” by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language. The result is a stunning global celebration of joy\, as all the earth sings as one\, “omnis terra\, jubilate!” Local musicologist Eric Charnofsky will give a pre-concert presentation about this work\, providing insight into the cultural themes of the music and languages in this work. We hope you will arrive early for this talk to enhance your experience of the concert. Our friends from Global Cleveland will also help us make this a truly global celebration. Look for them greeting you before the concert and take the opportunity to learn more about their important mission in our multicultural community. WRC will be sharing a percentage of concert donations with them. Under the direction of David Gilson\, and with a chamber orchestra and soloists\, the 100+ members of the chorale look forward to sharing the joy of this music with you. \nSunday\, June 8th at 3:30 pm Pre-concert talk at 2:30 First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland 3630 Fairmount Blvd.\, Shaker Heights\, OH \nWRC concerts are free and open to the public. Freewill offering will be accepted at the door and online. This concert will be livestreamed. More information and streaming link at https://www.westernreservechorale.org/performances

SUMMARY:IAN MAKSIN: AMOR RENATUS (Rebirth of Love)
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned cellist\, composer\, and multilingual vocalist Ian Maksin for another amazing musical journey in search of light\, love\, and empowerment. This album unveils a collection of original instrumental compositions for cello\, powerfully augmented into virtual orchestra through the use of loop pedal\, and further expanded by sound of diverse percussion instruments ranging from trance-inducing grooves of the West African djembe to deep\, heart-beat-like sound of the Mongolian frame drum.    Inspired by music of Vivaldi\, Mozart\, Piazzolla and fused with traditional music from Africa\, the Middle East and the Balkans\, his new album “Amor Renatus” elevates you to a new realm outside the dimensions of time\, place and identity\, giving an opportunity to process deep\, dark emotions\, to ultimately rediscover peace and to find enlightenment and healing for the soul. Ian    Maksin has created his own unique style by blending elements of different genres and traditional music from around the globe in a new way using his cello as the main unifying force. He uses the loop pedal and other electronic devices to augment the sound of the cello and turn it into a virtual orchestra. He sings pop and traditional songs from around the globe in more than 30 and writes his own originals in at least four. He has released several albums of original music for cello inspired by his world travels and collaborations with native musicians.    Apart from performing the entire new album\, in the second half of the concert Ian Maksin will perform other original instrumental compositions as well as traditional songs from Maksin’s collection of over 200 songs in 31 languages. Portion of the ticket and merch sales from this tour will be directed to benefit humanitarian relief organizations in areas affected by war.

SUMMARY:ELLIS ISLAND: THE DREAM OF AMERICA
DESCRIPTION:Peter Boyer’s Grammy-nominated multimedia work for orchestra\, Ellis Island: The Dream of America honors the International Newcomer experience with a compelling combination of music\, narration\, and historic images. It traces the experiences of seven International Newcomers from seven countries on their way to America\, beginning in the early parts of the past century. The actor’s monologues/narratives are a powerful testament to the experience of thousands of International Newcomers who entered America through that iconic portal. The text from “Ellis Island” comes from The Ellis Island Oral History Project. By the time the doors were closed in 1954\, more than 12 million International Newcomers had come through. The concert is a timely reminder that\, for so many who have come here\, America has been a symbol of freedom and opportunity for new life.

SUMMARY:Lessons from South Africa: Moving Past Polarization and Intense Division in America
DESCRIPTION:At a time when America is facing immense polarization\, there are lessons to be learned from other nations that have faced similar challenges. From South Africa to Northern Ireland\, other societies have struggled with intense divisions that nearly tore them apart. What solutions worked for countries like South Africa that Americans can consider to reconcile our own divisions? And what does truth and reconciliation look like here in our own country with its own history of colonization and slavery? Roelf Meyer is known for his role as the South African government’s chief representative in the 1993 negotiations to end apartheid and establish a democratic country. He served in the cabinet of former President Nelson Mandela\, and later became secretary-general of the National Party. In 1997 he co-founded the United Democratic Movement. Meyer consulted on international peace processes in Kosovo\, Myanmar\, Northern Ireland\, and Rwanda\, among others. Mohammed Bhabha is a former Member of Parliament\, qualified attorney\, and experienced negotiator. He was part of the African National Congress (ANC) team at the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA)\, and later as part of the agreements on the final South African Constitution. Mohammed has worked on transitional and constitutional support projects in Kenya\, South Sudan\, Madagascar\, Sri Lanka\, Yemen\, Palestine\, Bahrain\, and Zimbabwe. Join the City Club of Cleveland for a conversation led by Carina Van Vliet with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs\, and two renowned world leaders who were instrumental in ending apartheid in South Africa on lessons that we can apply to current American divisions.
